Planet Caravan is a simple and straightforward song built around just two arpeggiated chords, making it a perfect song to learn on your lunch break or at the end of a long day!
The first chord
The song is based on two chords: Emin9 and D.
Let’s start with the Emin9. Place your index finger on the second fret of the A string, and your pinky on the fourth fret of the D string. Make sure you arch both your pinky and your index finger so you’re not muting the other strings!
We want to arpeggiate the first three notes of the chord, so we’re going to play the E, A and D strings one by one. We then strum the top three strings, quickly mute everything with our right hand, and then strum the whole chord again. To finish, just pluck the A string (with your index finger still on the second fret).
We then move on to the next chord!
The second chord
To play second chord in Planet Caravan, place your pinky on the fifth fret of the A string and your ring finger on the fourth fret of the D string. Make sure you use these two fingers as we want to keep the index finger available for later!
Here, we want to arpeggiate the A, D, G and B strings. Then, repeat the pattern, but after playing the open G string, play it again with your index finger on the second fret.
We then jump back to the beginning! Easy!
The solo
The solo is in the key of E minor and uses the E Dorian scale. Let’s have a look at the shape that Jed is using as an example. Try to emphasise the 2nd and the 6th, just as Jed demonstrates and experiment with the shape below!
