Unit 3

The Authenticator

In this third unit we take a big jump upwards and start to tackle this epic song that covers a wide variety of guitar parts, building upon all the knowledge and work we have done so far.

Unit 4

In our final unit we will be taking the same track, “The Authenticator”, and look at all the other guitar parts that are layered up on top of the core guitar part.

Introduction

The drummer who plays guitar!

Dave Grohl has achieved something quite spectacular, he has been in two of the greatest modern rock bands ever, playing a different instrument in each! Playing drums in Nirvana, and guitar and lead vocal in Foo Fighters! It’s important to understand this progression from drummer to guitar player, as it hugely shapes his particular style. The most obvious element, as you might expect, is his absolutely incredible rhythm, and that’s a huge focus of this course. Secondly, but just as important, is his musicality. He is thinking as a whole band when he writes, not just a guitar player playing his own parts. This is a crucial difference that we need to understand if we want to play in bands.

If you want to take your rhythm skills to the next level and become an all round better guitar player and musician, this course is going to serve you very well!

Thinking like the band...

Breaking down the course into 4 units, we have time and space to explore the core aspects of Dave’s playing that make him such an iconic player and band leader. In unit 1 we dive straight into a song that tests your current rhythm skills, and covers all the essential basics that you need to have in place to develop further, especially the switch between 8th and 16th note strumming. Then, for unit 2 we dive deeper into the “drummer turns guitar player” idea, exploring a drum kit and showing you how to play with drums and the band in mind. For units 3 and 4 we tackle a song that massively levels up from unit 1, in both the rhythm aspects and the various guitar layers, all of which you will learn. If you are an aspiring songwriter or want to be in a band, this is essential viewing!
