John Frusciante

Player Studies

Difficulty

Intermediate

This course includes the following 4 units

Unit 1

Twiddly Widdly's

In this first unit our focus is to learn how Frusciante embellishes certain CAGED chord shapes. We call these his "twiddly widdlys"...

Unit 2

Over The Viaduct

In this second unit we will be taking all of the theory and new skill set from the previous unit and apply it to a Frusciante style, laid back track.

Unit 3

Picking Hand Development

In this third unit, we will take a departure from the fiddly, more mellow sound of the clean CAGED chord work, and turn our attention to the more heavy hitting chunky strumming work

Unit 4

Won't Start

In our final unit we will be learning a full track, inspired by Frusciante's heavy hitting funk rock playing!

Introduction

Red Hot guitar playing

Welcome to our John Frusciante player study! In this 20 lesson course, we will be guiding you through all the core skills and techniques you need to deeply understand how John Frusciante plays. This is not a simple case of learning a RHCP song and then moving on. We're learning by taking a proper look under the hood of John's style, breaking down the theory and applying it to our custom written Frusciante tracks. These tracks capture the essence of his playing... And what a player he is.

Flicky bits and hard-hitting riffs...

Dion Rushe

Don't Stop

As we were building this course we knew that we wanted to focus on the two most important parts of his playing, beautifully summarised by Dion in the quote above! Yes, it's an oversimplification, but I think we can all relate to what Dion is talking about here. The "flicky" bits are those CAGED chords played with Hendrix-Esque embellishments, and the "hard-hitting riffs" define how Frusciante approaches his lead and rhythm playing. It's aggressive, it's full-throttle... It's hard!
