Unit 1

Rock Legato

Take your speed to the next level with legato! Claire teaches how to build a technique that will serve you for a guitar playing lifetime!

Introduction

Play faster, quicker! 😂

It’s fair to say that all of us will have some level of desire to play faster than we do now, whether that’s just to catch up to your favourite solos, or to hit elite level speeds. One fantastic way to quickly get faster is with legato playing. In particular, rock solos often require you to play really fast, and using this technique can help you get to the speed without getting too mechanical with it. We can drop the picking focus and instead let the fretting hand do all of the work. On top of that obvious benefit, you also get a smoother sound to your lead playing, as there are fewer pick strokes to create attack. Without doubt, when used well, a legato rock “run” can massively elevate your soloing, and can then be used to unlock a new difficulty of songs.

I started learning legato because of Mark Tremonti! I was struggling with fast alternate picking, but this technique helped me get to the next shred level!

Claire Genoud

5 lessons to build rock legato

Over 5 lessons Claire will take you from the core strength and coordination you need to master legato, all the way up to tackling high speed legato runs. The first lesson builds our core base layer of strength, followed by lesson 2 introducing the 3 note per string scale and explaining why this is an essential way to approach the fretboard. Lesson 3 is all about building sequences to be able to deliver epic runs, and lesson 4 explains how subdivisions can have a huge impact on your soloing. Finally, lesson 5 offers two very high speed licks so you can apply these new skills, before taking them out into the world and using them in your own soloing.
