What you'll be learning

  • Welcome to this third Acoustic guitar pathway! 🎉😃

In this pathway we go all in on the idea of creating the "one person band" style acoustic vibe! That means that we are able to play the chords, melody and even percussion, all at the same time. Quite the quest!

In order to get there we have a cracking course from Thomas to kick us off, followed by a dive into 7th chords, fingerstyle percussion, 9th chords, a range of challenging songs and of course, our Acoustic John Mayer player study!

There is a huge amount to sink your teeth into, and you can trust in the pathway to get you there. Just work through it, take your time, and enjoy the process!

    Before you begin

To tackle this course I would recommend having taken the previous The Fantastic Fingerstyle Quest 👌 [Acoustic Pathway 2], simply because we pick up where we left off there and jump to another level of difficulty. However, if you can confidently say that you have a good grasp of fingerstyle playing already, know your barre chords, and want to take it to a more advanced level, you can start here!

    Acoustic Fingerstyle

Level 3: The final leg of our epic journey to fingerstyle greatness.

To start our pathway off, Thomas is going to be guiding you through a very epic course where we'll help you develop this self-accompanied approach to playing acoustic guitar. Similar to previous fingerstyle courses, we learn through songs, and Thomas has created 4 incredible pieces for you here. The course culminates in an epic Tommy Emmanuel style track, that will test everything you have learnt. Take your time with this one, as it's absolutely not to be rushed!

    7th Chords

Take the next step beyond triads!

Whilst a lot of those pieces are still sinking in (and that will take time), we should absolutely look at a little bit of chord construction theory. Assuming you know your triad construction (if not, check that out first in our theory lab) here is the construction of 7th chords, which we're using more and more as we develop.

    Apply your new skills

Hopefully you're slowly getting those 4 tracks from our first course under your belt. If so, here are two more real world tracks for you to now sink your teeth into. Remember, with fingerstyle most of the learning comes through experience and learning songs… So don't rush any part of this process to get to the next "thing to learn". Enjoy each song and work to get the most out of it.

    Fingerstyle Percussion

Level 1: Make your fingerstyle groove!

We'll now get very specific on the percussion side of the acoustic playing. You've already done plenty of work with this in previous courses, but this challenge offers something a little different… Another way to approach it that will further improve this rhythmic side of your playing. Good luck!

I'm now going to throw in an absolute mega track to learn… Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder. however, this is not just learn the chords and away we go, this is Thomas' complete arrangement of the track! This is a really tough track to get together, so take your time with it (I feel like I'm repeating myself here, but really, take your time… this is hard stuff!).

    9th Chords

    Learn chords with character!

I've given you a lot of pieces and tracks to learn recently, all at a pretty high level, so we're going to take a break and learn two units of theory. This gives you something new to work through, but also allows you to continue learning the previous tracks before we get to the John Mayer Acoustic study! First up, let's look at 9th chords!

    Diminished Chords

Build tension with these dark & beautiful chords!

As I said previously, let's do cover last bit of theory whilst the previous pieces and new techniques are sinking in. This time we'll look at diminished chords, which you will find come up in your acoustic fingerstyle playing, and although they are not as common as major and minor, do play a big part in music. Here's the theory to dive into…

    John Mayer Acoustic

    Virtuoso Acoustic Skills

Here we go! It's John Mayer time, and there is no doubt that he is a master acoustic player. The best thing about this study is that Thomas takes John's style, and re works it slightly to fit a more traditional fingerstyle approach. This essentially means that we can learn to sound like John Mayer, without having to learn a completely new style of playing! Thank you Thomas! Enjoy this difficult but rewarding study!

    Apply your new skills

You've got to the last stage of the pathway! Well done! In this stage I'm offering 3 John Mayer tunes for you to learn and apply your new skills with. I would highly recommend learning all 3, although it has to be said that Neon is a truly advanced level guitar piece, so you may want to leave that one for last... Good luck!

Congratulations for completing this incredibly challenging pathway! You've done absolutely brilliantly At this point it's fair to say that you are in the high end of intermediate playing, or even advanced level! Beyond this point you can continue to study more and more acoustic playing, or, if you fancy a change you could dive head first into some electric work! We have so many electric pathways and courses for you to feast on, so take a look around and decide what feels right for you!

What is important is that you take a range of your favourite songs from the pathway, and practice them regularly, to ensure that those rhythm and chord skills are continuously improving along the way. When they become too easy, let them go! There will be plenty more taking there place along the way. See you soon!
