What you'll be learning

  • Welcome to this Level 2 Acoustic guitar pathway! πŸŽ‰πŸ˜ƒ

In this pathway our focus is based entirely around fingerstyle guitar. This is where we put down the pick for the moment (although we will be picking it up at points within the course) and focus on how to get that picking hand fluid using just the fingers.

Fingerstyle offers us the opportunity to work towards playing chords and melody at the same time, and that is the underlying goal that we are working towards as we work through this pathway. To be somewhat of a one person band!

Along this journey we also unlock the barre chords for you, tackle some hugely important harmony theory (allowing you to learn songs by ear) and finish with our Ed Sheeran player study, which will be a fantastic application of your new skills!

So, when you're ready to get your fingerstyle skills fired up, pick up that beautiful acoustic guitar of yours, and let's get started!

    Before you begin

To tackle this course you need to have a good grasp of a wide range of open chords, being able to fluently change between them. You need to be able to play 8th note and 16th note strumming patterns, using a pick to strum. If you don't have that, head back to Your Acoustic Journey Starts Here πŸŽ‰ [Acoustic Pathway 1] and work through this pathway. Otherwise, you're good to go!

Level 1: Enter The World Of Fingerstyle

Welcome to the first part of this epic pathway! We start with the absolute essentials of fingerstyle playing, which are all about assigning a certain finger to a certain string. The beauty of this course is that we don't spend too long bogged down in technique before immediately applying it to custom written tracks. Thomas has done a great job with this course, so follow his expert guidance all the way through.

This is why we have 2 wonderful fingerstyle songs for you to now learn, and I would recommend taking your time and doing both songs! Good luck!

    Barre Chords

    Breaking down barre-iers!

Whilst those fingerstyle skills are still sinking in, and as you continue to practice playing along to the tracks in the previous course (as well as your new songs) we will take a necessary side-quest and cover barre chords. These chords are essential learning for any acoustic player, and Franco will guide you through them perfectly.

    Scale Harmonisation

    Building chords and keys!

Now you have a better understanding of barre chords we can start to work on the concept of harmony. This is the idea that you can build a key based around the notes of the major scale. We'll start with the theory, then follow it up with a more practical application in the next course!

At this point, as you are still working through the pieces from the previous course, let's add a couple of classic songs to the mix. These are perfect songs to test your new skills, so gradually work through them. Ed Sheeran

    Simple chords, beautiful songs

We're now in the final two stages of this pathway, and we have a cracking player study lined up for you. Ed Sheeran is quite criminally underrated at times for his guitar skills, but he's a great player! Learning how we can apply our fingerstyle technique to his style is an important test for us, to help see how flexible these fingerstyle rules can be. There are some great custom written tracks to learn along the way as well!

Well done for getting all the way through this epic pathway! It's a huge achievement so take a moment to reflect before moving on to the next pathway! At this point you have two options for your next steps…

You can simply move onto the next step in your acoustic learning, by tackling No More Bands, Just Two Hands πŸ™Œ [Acoustic Pathway 3] , but remember that the jump up is again quite steep. The other option may be spending a bit of time just working with the songs and custom tracks you have, continuing to improve them, then jumping up!

Either way, it is important is that you take a range of your favourite songs from the pathway, and practice them regularly, to ensure that those rhythm and chord skills are continuously improving along the way. When they become too easy, let them go! There will be plenty more taking there place along the way. See you in the next pathway!
