What you'll be learning

  • Welcome to this Level 1 Lead Guitar pathway! πŸŽ‰πŸ˜ƒ

In this pathway we are building your lead skills from absolute scratch. Our main focus will be the pentatonic scale, as well as the main diatonic scale, as these are the scales that will have you quickly soloing and making beautiful melodies.

Of course, a big part of the lead guitar challenge is technique. In this pathway we help you build that technique and strength in the fingers to play exercises, scales and solos as well as bends, slides and more!

Along the way we'll be applying these scales to great players like Noel Gallagher and Jack White, which will help you gain a deeper understanding of the scales you are using, and how they can be creatively used across the 'board, in every key.

So, when you're ready, grab your electric guitar, plug in, and let's get started!

    Before you begin

You don't need any lead skills at all to take this pathway. We build from scratch here, however, it would be worth having built up some rhythm and chord skills, either via Your Electric Journey Starts Here πŸŽ‰ [Electric Pathway 1] or if you already know you have a good understanding of basic chords and rhythms (open chords and powerchords especially) then you're good to go!

    Lead Guitar

    Level 1: Laying the foundations

Let's kick off this wonderful pathway with our original lead guitar course. I will be guiding you through the absolute basics of lead guitar, and even have you playing your first solos and riffs by the end of the course. One little tip is to try to play using an amp from day one, as part of the learning will be listening to your sound and tone when plugged in. If you want some help choosing the gear, get in touch with us on our community channel! Good luck!

    Guitar Gym

    Improve your technique

Let's get some guitar gym exercises, focusing on the spider exercises and pentatonic shape 1, into your daily warm ups. Memorise both exercises here and play through them at least once before you start your practice session. This will ensure you are getting those fingers moving in the right way each day!

    Songs

    Apply your new skills

Before we dive into another course, let's learn some real world songs, using our new lead skills. I would recommend tackling both of these songs, as one is in major and the other in minor. My Girl requires some chord playing as well, so do your best with that depending on how many chord shapes you know already (you could use open chords rather than barre chords for example). Good luck!

    Pentatonic Theory

Breaking down the most popular scale on the guitar!

Let's now take the deeper look at the pentatonic theory - especially important now that you are getting more and more familiar with the shape itself. This kind of theory helps to support your learning, and build a deeper understanding of what's going on musically!

    Bends

Level 1: Time to master those bends!

It's time for our first proper look at bends! Bends are an essential part of lead guitar playing, but the skill takes time to build. It's that combination of ear training and technique that make it tough, but we have Franco here to make sure that you learn in a productive way! Work through this wonderful course, and we'll have some cool songs to practice this skill with afterwards.

Let's put those bends into practice with two amazing tracks that have brilliant lead parts in them. Of course, there is a lot of chord playing around the lead parts, but those lead parts are your focus. If you can play the chords then wonderful (tonight)! πŸ˜‚ If you can't, that is a good indication that after this pathway it would be useful to take the Your Electric Journey Starts Here [Electric Pathway 1] pathway.

Jack White & The White Stripes

    Epic tunes from simple elements

I'm excited to introduce you to your first player study! Franco will be guiding you through this wonderful Jack White study, that will help you further apply your pentatonic skills, as well as some chord and rhythm skills. You may also find that you get really into the gear side of things alongside this player study, and there is nothing wrong with that! Enjoy what the gear can offer, but don't let it become more important than developing the skills in your fingers. Good luck!

There is absolutely no way that we could move on from the Jack White player study without offering up this classic White Stripes tune to learn! It's perfect for practicing your lead skills, as well as combining those skills with your powerchords and general rhythm playing. Have fun!

    Guitar Gym

    Improve your technique

It's been a while since we introduced a new guitar gym exercise for you, so here's a great Spider workout to help improve that finger dexterity and independence. Add this to your normal warm ups, alongside the previous gym sessions. Keep building speed as you get more and more fluent with it.

    Noel Gallagher

    Master chord choice and melody

We're now onto the final player study of our pathway, and there is no better player to go with than Noel Gallagher. I have to admit, Noel was one of my big heroes when I first started playing, alongside Eric Clapton. I loved how melodic and beautifully played his solos were, and that is what we learn in this player study! Franco guides you through it expertly, and by the end you'll have that box 1 pentatonic absolutely nailed!

We can't let the pathway be complete without tackling some absolutely awesome Oasis tunes. Franco guides you through both, and I highly recommend you learn both. They each include a great solo, as well as further opportunity to practice your chords and rhythm! Enjoy!

Congrats for getting all the way through this epic pathway! You've done absolutely brilliantly - give yourself a big pat on the back! At this point you have two options for your next steps…

If you found the rhythm and chord skills tricky when working through this pathway, be sure to now circle back and take the Your Electric Journey Starts Here πŸŽ‰ [Electric Pathway 1].

If you are comfortable playing through every song so far, both with rhythm and lead, you can either choose The Great Barre Chord Quest πŸŽ‰ [Electric Pathway 2] or Complete Fretboard Navigation 🎸 [Lead Pathway 2] , depending on whether your main focus is lead or rhythm. Both great places to go next!

What is important is that you take a range of your favourite songs from the pathway, and practice them regularly, to ensure that those rhythm and chord skills are continuously improving along the way. When they become too easy, let them go! There will be plenty more taking there place along the way. See you in the next pathway!
