What you'll be learning

  • Welcome to this Level 3 Electric guitar pathway! 🎉😃

In this pathway our main focus is the CAGED system. I'm sure you've heard of it, and if you haven't, get ready to revolutionise the way you see the fretboard! We start by introducing the system, covering the main shapes and theory behind it. As we move on through the course we continue to expand on the basics of the system, building it into the very fabric of your everyday playing.

Along the journey we'll also cover triads, a range of amazing songs to practice this system, we'll look at the wonderful John Frusciante and in our final course we even tackle a bit of Jimi Hendrix… Epic!

I'm excited for you to be able to study all of this incredible content, and your view of the fretboard will completely shift over the course of this pathway. I'll be guiding you through each step, so when you're ready, grab your guitar and let's get started!

    Before you begin

This pathway is an intermediate chords and rhythm pathway, and therefore you need to have a good base to build upon. You need to be very confident with barre chords, powerchords, open chords and have both a 16th note and 8th note rhythm understanding. We'll also be using all 5 pentatonic shapes. Here are a few courses to brush up on before we get started.

Level 4: Learn The CAGED system

We're going to kick off this wonderful pathway with an essential course on CAGED chords. We'll quickly recap the barre shapes, then dive into the major and minor CAGED system, offering you some great tracks to learn alongside the shapes each time. This is a crucial course and sets us up for the whole pathway, so enjoy it!

    Everything is CAGED

    Levelling up your CAGED work!

You now know the CAGED system, and can play through the 10 shapes (or at least you're working on that!). Next up I want to break that down a little further for you into something more creative, which is the true magic of the CAGED system. This will give you an even deeper understanding of the shapes and how we can use them day to day.

    Improve your technique

This is a great point to get some Guitar Gym exercises into your daily practice, and we have two awesome CAGED system exercises for you. Use these to ensure those chord shapes are getting an epic amount of repetition and practice! They are not designed to be easy exercises, they are designed to push you, so take your time with them and try to do them at least a few times a week.

    Apply your new skills

When taken at face value, these are relatively simply open chord / barre chord songs. I challenge you to try and play the songs using your new CAGED system skills. When you see an A major, don't go to your basic barre chords or open shapes, get creative and try to use the other CAGED shapes! This is your song work now!

    Triad Construction

    How to build chords

CAGED and triads go hand in hand. It's therefore important to establish the underlying theory, so that as we dive deeper into the CAGED shapes, you are on board with the concept as well as the mechanics of the playing. Enjoy my lab coat skills too!

    Triads

    Triad theory and application

Now that you have a handle on Triad theory you're ready to tackle Dion's wonderful Triads course, where we'll explore how we can play smaller voicings of these shapes to create something more musical and deliberate. This harks back to similar ideas covered in "Everything Is CAGED" but now in more depth. Good luck!

    John Frusciante

    Red Hot guitar playing!

I'm excited to say we've got to the first player study for the pathway, and this is a big one! The incredible John Frusciante is a master of the CAGED system, and in this study Dion explores his style in great depth. We tackle his CAGED skills, fills and licks, lead parts and even more importantly, his epic rhythm skills. You will love this study, and it will give you some real context for all of that CAGED work. Level 5: Chords and lead combined!

We're now ready to challenge one of the trickiest courses on the site. This is a real advancement in CAGED, as its focus is now on joining the CAGED shapes with pentatonic shapes. We've done some of that work with the John Frusciante course, but now we'll dive in completely. If you don't know the 5 pentatonic shapes yet, this may prove a little too tricky, so go back and learn those first! Assuming you know them, however, you can grab your guitar and get started! Good luck!

Congratulations on completing this CAGED pathway! Understanding CAGED is a huge milestone for any guitar player and truly paves the way for unlocking the fretboard. At this point you have two options for your next steps…

To become a really well rounded player I recommend the Complete Fretboard Fluidity 🤩 [Lead Pathway 3] pathway. You're now up to a really high level with your rhythm and chord skills - it's time to get your lead skills to match!

If you want to dive into acoustic playing, you have that option as well, and I would suggest The Fantastic Fingerstyle Quest 👌 [Acoustic Pathway 2] be a great place to start!

What is important is that you take a range of your favourite songs from the pathway, and practice them regularly, to ensure that those rhythm and chord skills are continuously improving along the way. When they become too easy, let them go! There will be plenty more taking there place along the way. See you in the next pathway!
