What you'll be learning

  • Welcome to this Lead Guitar Level 3 pathway! 🎉😃

In this pathway our main focus is to level up every single one of your lead skills. This means tackling harder solos, quicker licks, more bends, more styles and ultimately just hugely improving every part of your lead playing.

We build upon our 5 pentatonic shapes as this divides our fretboard, but now we start the process of blending major and minor scales together, developing the diatonic scale across the whole fretboard, improving your bends and starting to work with chords tones and arpeggios.

I can confidently say that by the end of this pathway, you will be a proper lead guitar player, at a level we could consider "Intermediate +"… Which is my eyes essentially means you could be ready to play gigs, be in a band or jam with others confidently. This doesn't mean you have to do those things, it just means you could, as you'd have the skills!

So, please join me in this tricky and extremely rewarding pathway, as my team & I guide you through this final stage of fundamental lead learning!

    Before you begin

You should be familiar with all 5 major and minor pentatonic shapes and the diatonic major and minor scales. A good grasp of vibrato, bends, legato playing and an ability to play relatively quickly (a rough aim around 16th notes 70BPM) is also important.

Essentially, check Lead Pathway II and if it all feels comfortable, you're ready to go!

    Chuck Berry

    The ‘50s virtuoso!

We kick off our pathway with an essential player study. Essential because we'll be diving more and more into the world of rock/blues as we work through this pathway. We need to go back to the roots of this genre, with a look at the master of Rock & Roll guitar… Chuck Berry! Thomas guides you through this awesome study, which will help you develop the rhythm within your lead guitar parts like never before.

    Apply your new skills

Before moving on, let's take our new Chuck Berry skills and apply them to some of his classic songs! You can take as many or as few of these as you like, depending on how much you enjoy the songs. Each song does offer something different though, and you are very welcome to work through all of them! Good luck!

    Guitar Gym

    Improve your technique

Now is a great time to upgrade your guitar gym workouts, by tackling these two beasts! Try to work through these at the start of your practice sessions, and keep a log of the speed in your practice diary. I love these exercises as they are so useable in your soloing, in addition to being great exercises.

    Angus Young

Play Like The Rhythmic Lead Master!

If we're thinking about next steps after Chuck Berry, Angus Young is one of the first players who comes to mind. Why? Well he took what Chuck did to another level… Another planet almost! 😂 This study will really test your pentatonic and powerchord skills, especially your ability to blend that major and minor pentatonic and play great rock licks in all 5 pentatonic boxes. Best of luck, and have fun with this one!

With your new found Angus Young skills, we absolutely have to learn some AC/DC tracks! We've picked two of the absolute best, both containing tricky lead parts for you to learn. Thunderstruck especially will have you working on your alternate picking, whilst Highway To Hell has a great rock solo to master!

    How To Learn Licks

Dan takes you through the process of properly learning a lick.

When I first wrote this course, it came about because I found myself saying the same thing to all of my students… "how many times do you actually play the licks you learn in a solo, outside of that solo?". The answer was, generally, "not much"! This question holds the answer to why you may struggle with improvisation, and this course helps you break through that barrier. Enjoy!

    Guitar Gym

    Improve your technique

Here's another great guitar gym exercise, that you can play, to help you master those pentatonic scales. Add this one to the previous exercises, and chop and change between them all. This will help you build your confidence playing these shapes, and getting them more and more into your improvisation!

    Pentatonic to Diatonic

    Upgrading your pentatonic

At this point in the pathway I want to stop hammering home the pentatonic work, and start to expand more and more into full diatonic scales. This simply means using the full 7 note scale, rather than the 5 note pentatonic scale. Thomas beautifully guides you through how we can easily add this to our lead playing, and offers a lick in each shape. A quick note, if the CAGED ideas are extremely unfamiliar in this course, I would recommend taking the Unravel The Mystery of CAGED 🙌 [Electric Pathway 3] once you've completed this one!

Bon Jovi, Boston & Journey… Does it get more classic rock than that! These are essential guitar learning songs, and you are now ready to tackle them! There is a lot of lead application here, especially using your diatonic scales, so enjoy this part of the process. I would personally learn all three, but at least pick your favourite two!

    Bends

Level 2: Bend your way to expression

Before we dive into David Gilmour (the big one!) I want to upgrade your bending skills! We'll certainly need it for that player study, and Thomas has a wonderful challenge course to help work you through it. We'll tackle the more advanced bend concepts, as well as learning to fluidly use bends to make the guitar sing!

    David Gilmour

    Stadium filling classic rock sounds

It's time for the big one! Gilmour is an absolute lead guitar hero, and this study will put you through your paces! The solos are challenging mainly because of the speed we're working at, as well as the quality of the sound, based around his awesome vibrato. We're also diving into more advanced concepts such as arpeggios and layering on top of them. Take your time with this study guys, it's a tough one!

    Guitar Gym

    Improve your technique

Just before we get to some classic Pink Floyd tracks, let's get those arpeggios we learnt in the Gilmour course into our daily warm ups and guitar gym sessions. At this point you have a lot of guitar gym options, so just mix it up a little each day to keep it fresh, but be sure to add this one from today!

    Apply your new skills

And finally, we have two glorious Pink Floyd hits for you to learn. In many ways, thanks to the Gilmour study, you will have a lot of these ideas covered! However, learning the proper songs is very worth doing, as we pick up more nuances and get a deeper understanding of this style of playing. They're also amazing songs to be able to say, "yeah, I can play those!". Good luck, and enjoy!

Congrats for getting all the way through this epic pathway! You've done absolutely brilliantly - remember to take the time to simply say "well done me!". At this point you have two options for your next steps…

If you haven't already taken it, the Unravel The Mystery of CAGED 🙌 [Electric Pathway 3] should be next on your list, assuming you've completed The Great Barre Chord Quest 🤘 [Electric Pathway 2]!

If you want to dive into acoustic playing, you have that option as well, and I would suggest The Fantastic Fingerstyle Quest 👌 [Acoustic Pathway 2] as a great place to start!

What is important is that you take a range of your favourite songs from the pathway, and practice them regularly, to ensure that those rhythm and chord skills are continuously improving along the way. When they become too easy, let them go! There will be plenty more taking there place along the way. See you in the next pathway!
